Arthritis and How You Can Take Control of Your Pain

Millions of Americans live with the difficulties of Arthritis. If you’ve been diagnosed with arthritis, you are not alone. There are 50 million people in the United States who have arthritis or a related condition, and like you they face many challenges as a result of the disease. The good news is, there are many ways to meet those challenges and lead a fulfilling life. Physical therapy and exercise incorporated  into your daily routine can help.

What is Arthritis?
The word “arthritis” means joint inflammation. There are more than 100 different forms of arthritis and related conditions that affect joints and the tissues around the joints, such as muscles and tendons. Some types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, can also affect other parts of the body, like the skin or internal organs.

Arthritis can limit your daily activities. A Physical Therapist can help get you back to your daily routine by:

· Improving your joint range of motion, muscle strength, and endurance
· Using heat and cold therapy to relieve pain and improve joint function
· Teaching how to properly use your joints to slowdown further degradation of the joint.
· Loosen stiff joints and help keep them moving
· Strengthen and stretch muscles that help support and move your joints
· Recommending assistive devices to make daily activities easier
· Help you sleep better and give you more energy

Despite the pain and stiffness, it’s important to move even if you have Arthritis. If you don’t move and exercise, the muscles surrounding the affected joint will become weaker, smaller and lose their ability to support the joint. This may lead to more joint pain. You may also experience some difficulty in walking, performing certain tasks and maintaining good posture. This is known as limited mobility. Pain at rest may mean that the disease is worsening. This is where Physical Therapy can help. Reddy-Care is staffed with expert therapists that use advanced techniques to help you reduce pain significantly and reach faster results.
