Simple Tips for Preventing Low Back Pain

Low back pain is a common cause of disability and handicap in the world today and it is documented that about 80 percent of Americans suffer from low back pain in their lifetime.

A huge percentage of low back pain cases are caused by sprains/strains caused by poor lifting techniques and poor posture when sitting. However, some cases arise from certain disorders like a ruptured or herniated disc, sciatica, arthritis, kidney infections, or infections of the spine.

Some of these causes of low back pain could be prevented by practicing the following:

Proper posture

Proper posture while sitting is very important as it prevents excessive sprain or strain on the supportive structures surrounding the back. Proper posture in sitting should be with the neck and back well supported without any slouching.

Proper mechanics while lifting

While lifting objects, it is important to bend at the hips and knees while keeping the back straight and to lift with the legs rather than the back

Ergonomically safe work stations

These are work stations that support proper posture and prevent excessive strain on the body’s supportive structures. It is imperative to make our workspace safe to prevent work-related back pain

Other preventive measures include;

  • Eat healthfully so you keep your body weight within a healthy range
  • Get regular exercise to keep your back muscles fit and flexible.
