Amputation

Amputation is surgery to remove all or part of a limb or extremity. You may need an amputation if you’ve undergone a severe injury or infection or have a health condition like peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

Most common signs and symptoms that can lead to limb loss,

Pain or numbness in the leg or foot
Slow or non-healing sores or wounds
Gangrene
Shiny, smooth, dry skin on the leg and foot
Thickening of toenails or nails
Absent or weakened pulse in the leg
An infection that won’t heal.

Causes of Amputation

Severe injury (from a vehicle accident or serious burn, for example)
Cancerous tumor in the bone or muscle of the limb
Serious infection that does not get better with antibiotics or other treatment
Thickening of nerve tissue, called a neuroma
Frostbite
