April is Autism Awareness Month. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability. ASD can range from mild to severe depending on the child’s social, communication, and behavior challenges. Some people with ASD need more help with their daily lives and activities compared to others. Signs of ASD are more likely to show in late infancy or early childhood. Signs of ASD continue throughout life. 

Signs and symptoms of ASD

• Avoiding eye contact
• Lack of engagement in social interactions
• Delayed speech and language skills
• Repetition of phrases or words
• Easily upset with minor changes
• Obsessive interests
• Lack of safety awareness
• Odd reactions to smell, sound, taste, or touch
• Delays in jumping, running, or walking
• Poor balance
• Lack of coordination
• Poor posture
• Decreased hand and eye coordination
