Brain Injury and Recovery: The Essential Role of Occupational Therapy
An acquired brain injury (ABI) refers to any damage to the brain that occurs after birth, distinguishing it from hereditary, congenital, degenerative, or birth-induced conditions. ABIs can be categorized into two main types: traumatic brain injury (TBI) and non-traumatic brain injury, each with distinct causes and symptoms.
Types of Acquired Brain Injury
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI):
TBI occurs when an external force impacts the brain, leading to changes in brain function or evidence of brain damage. Common causes include car accidents, sports injuries, falls, and physical violence. - Non-Traumatic Brain Injury:
This type of injury is caused by internal factors such as a lack of oxygen, exposure to toxins, or pressure from a tumor. Conditions like stroke, heart attacks, and infections can also lead to non-traumatic brain injuries.

How Occupational Therapy Can Help
Occupational therapy plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation process following a brain injury. Whether working independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team, an occupational therapist (OT) will assess the client’s specific needs and challenges, helping to develop a personalized rehabilitation plan.
The OT works closely with the client and their family to identify areas of difficulty that impact daily routines. By setting realistic and achievable goals, the OT guides the client through the rehabilitation process, aiming to restore the highest possible level of independence and functionality.
