Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a type of neuropathy that affects the sensation and function of your hand and arm. The carpal tunnel is a narrow tunnel in the wrist where your major nerves and arteries pass to your hand. The meridian nerve is one of these main nerves.
When the ligaments around the carpal tunnel become tight it can place pressure on the meridian nerve, causing tingling, pain, and loss of sensation from the thumb to the first two fingers of your hand. Carpal tunnel may start as a mild tingling sensation and progress, eventually making it hard to complete simple tasks, like holding a cup of coffee. Carpal tunnel syndrome can develop for a variety of reasons:
- Poor posture
- Repetitive activities, putting continual pressure on your wrist
- Trauma or injury to the wrist
- Other conditions such as diabetes or arthritis can also play a contributing factor.
Physical therapy is often the first step in noninvasively treating carpal tunnel and relieving symptoms. Physical therapy focuses on improving wrist mobility and reducing inflammation, relieving pressure on the carpal tunnel. Treatment will often encompass a combination of different hands-on treatments like different exercises and stretches, and other passive modalities like ultrasound technology to relieve pain and inflammation.
