Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms
Carpal tunnel is a painful condition that can cause pain, numbness, and stiffness in the fingers and hands. The carpal tunnel is a narrow tunnel in the wrist where your major arteries and nerves pass from your forearm into your hand. When ligaments around the carpal tunnel become tight, pressure can be placed on the Meridian nerve (one of the main nerves that passes through this area). This causes the tingling and pain.
If you are experiencing carpal tunnel symptoms, prompt treatment can help you get relief and prevent things from getting worse. Symptoms can sometimes be improved by resting, taking breaks, and applying cold packs. Your doctor may recommend corticosteroid injections if needed and in severe cases surgery may be needed.
Physical therapy is a great noninvasive and effective treatment for carpal tunnel. Therapists will work with you to design a program that will improve your wrists mobility and function. Physical therapy focusses on long-term results, teaching you proper postural techniques that can prevent recurrence and at home exercises you can do on your own. Your physical therapy program may also include:
- Ultrasound treatment
- Laser therapy
- Stretches and exercises to improve range-of-motion
- & Massage therapy
