Concussion
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination. Concussions are usually caused by a blow to the head. Violently shaking of the head and upper body also can cause concussions.
Symptoms of Concussion
- Headache. (This is the most common symptom.)
- Nausea or vomiting
- Confusion
- Temporary loss of consciousness
- Balance problems/dizziness/lightheadedness
- Double or blurry vision
- Ringing in the ears
- Sensitivity to light and noise
- Feeling tired or drowsy
- Changes in sleep patterns (sleeping much more or less than usual or can’t sleep)
- Trouble understanding and/or concentrating
- Depression or sadness
- Being irritable, nervous, and anxious
- Feelings of being “just not right” or in a "fog”
- Difficulty paying attention, forgetful, memory loss
Symptoms of Concussion for toddlers
- Bumps on the head
- Vomiting
- Being irritable, cranky
- Will not eat or nurse
- Change in sleep pattern, sleepy at unusual times
- More fussy than usual, won’t stop crying despite being comforted
- Blank stare
Causes of Concussion
- Falls, particularly in children and older adults
- Playing a contact sport
- Lack of proper safety gear or supervision for contact sports
- Car, motorcycle, bicycle, and other accidents that cause a blow to the head
- Being hit, struck with an object, or other physical abuse
- An earlier concussion
Physical therapists can play a significant role in the rehabilitation process, particularly in the treatment of systems relating to neck and upper back pain as well as dizziness and balance problems. Also, physical therapists can help provide early-stage treatment of dysfunctions of the vision system, which can be caused by a concussion.
