Elbow Fracture

The elbow is a joint between the upper arm and forearm. The elbow consists of three bones which are known as the humerus, ulna and radius. An elbow fracture may occur when there is enough force on the elbow to break one of the three bones. Elbow fractures may occur from falling on your hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder. Other causes of elbow fractures may happen due to car accidents or sports-related injuries.

Signs of an elbow fracture may include:

There are three types of bone fracture: a crack in the bone, a bone chip and a more severe fracture which is splitting of the bone. Depending on how severe the fracture is you may need a sling, cast or surgery. Physical therapy and occupational therapy can help speed up the recovery process. After your fracture is healed it is important to reteach the body how to reuse the joint.

At Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic Therapy, your physical therapist and occupational therapist will evaluate your arm, shoulder, elbow and wrist. Your physical therapist and occupational therapist will design a unique treatment plan tailored for your specific needs. Your treatment plan will improve your elbow movement, strength, flexibility, range of motion, and ease the swelling and pain. A series of strengthening exercises and stretches will be prescribed by your physical therapist to keep you moving and to prevent stiffness, weakness and swelling.

Your occupational therapist can help you stay independent by teaching you how to perform your daily activities after an elbow fracture. These daily activities may include getting dressed, eating, cooking, bathing, or even working on a computer. Occupational therapy teaches you how to use your elbow without causing more harm. Your occupational therapist can work with you to recommend possible home modifications for your safety. If you are suffering from an elbow fracture, our experienced team at Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic Therapy can help.
