Golfers Elbow
Golfer's elbow is also known as Medial Epicondylitis. Kevin Zemana PT, DPT states, “Medial epicondylitis is mostly seen in people with increased repetitive movements at work, throwing sports, weight lifting and other gripping activities. Overuse of the muscles causes inflammation of the tendinous insertion near the elbow.” Golfer’s elbow is a condition when the tendons on the inside of the forearm become irritated, painful and inflamed. Golfer’s elbow is caused by repetitive use in the hand, wrist, elbow and forearm.
Symptoms of golfer’s elbow may include
- Pain in forearm area with wrist and elbow movements
- Numbness and tingling when gripping or squeezing
- Weakness in the hand when gripping
- Elbow stiffness
A physical therapist will perform an evaluation which may include
- Strength and motion tests
- Checking your posture
- Check for muscle weakness and imbalances
- Questioning your hobbies and occupation
- Muscle tests
Kevin Zemana PT, DPT states, “There are a variety of treatment strategies that your physical therapist may have for your condition. Your rehabilitation provider can guide you in administering your plan of care. Home activities that can help this condition include rest from the activities that cause discomfort, application of heat, cryotherapy (icing), stretching and strengthening of the affected muscle groups.”
After your evaluation, your physical therapist will provide you with a unique treatment plan which may include pain management, manual therapy, range of motion exercises, strengthening exercises, patient education, functional training, myofascial release therapy, electrical stimulation, kinesiology taping, laser therapy, hands on therapy, and exercise prescription.
Physical therapy can help you gradually return to your usual activities and sports. When you feel your pain is gone and you are ready to get back on the golf course, practice the arm motions of golf. Follow up with an instructor to review if your golf techniques are correct, and make adjustments if needed.
