Hip/Pain Rehabilitation

Hip pain can be debilitating

Hip pain can be debilitating and cause pain not only in your hip but in the upper thighs, buttocks and joint as well.  Hip pain can be temporary or acute, as from a recent accident, or more long term and chronic due to a degenerative disease.

The most common cause of acute hip pain is tendonitis. This is an inflammation of the tendons, typically caused by too much exercise. This usually feels like a dull ache when you try to move or stretch your hip and will generally heal within a few days.

When we look at chronic or long-term hip pain, Arthritis is a commonly the culprit.  Arthritis can cause painful and stiff joints and make it hard to walk.  There are two main types of arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a condition caused by age related wearing down of the cartilage in the hip joint. The resulting friction can be painful. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by an inflammatory autoimmune condition. The bodies immune system launches an attack on the joints.  Other conditions causing hip pain are sciatica, and bursitis.

Hip fractures can cause very sudden severe pain and require immediate medical attention. Fractures are common in older adults, especially those who have weakened bones due to osteoporosis. Often surgery will be needed to correct it. Physical therapy will also be used to help you get back to battery.

After an injury or surgery, a physical rehabilitation program can help you regain strength, and restore flexibility and range of motion in your hips. Through modalities like exercise, heat and cold therapy, and laser treatment, pain and inflammation can be reduced. Once your physical therapist has determined the cause of your hip pain, they can design a program best suited to help you return to normal activities as soon as possible.
