Identifying the Causes of Low Back Pain

Identifying the Causes of Low Back Pain

Lower back pain is uncomfortable and can be debilitating in more severe cases. Lower back pain refers to pain in the lumbar region of your back, above your buttocks, and below your ribs. There are many reasons one can develop lower back pain, below are some common lower back issues.

The discs in the back are prone to injury; the outside of the disc can tear or herniate. A herniated disc, also known as a slipped or ruptured disc occurs when the cartilage surrounding the disc pushes against the spinal cord or nerve root.

Sciatica is a condition where the sciatic nerve gets pressed down upon, usually as the result of a herniated disc. The sciatic nerve connects the spine to the legs. Sciatica can cause pain all the way down in the legs and feet.

Abnormal spine curvatures, such as scoliosis can also result in lower back pain. The abnormal curvature can cause pain and poor posture, placing pressure on the muscles and tendons.

Other medical conditions such as arthritis and different kidney and bladder problems can also cause pain and inflammation in the lower back.

Whatever the cause, physical therapy is often an effective treatment for lower back pain. Physical therapy can not only help you get relief from back pain but also improve your overall strength and balance.  Treatment will usually include a combination of passive and active modalities.  Various exercises and stretches will be used to strengthen and improve muscle control, while passive modalities such as ultrasound technology can be used to stimulate healing. Treatment will be tailored to your individual needs.
