June is National Fruit & Vegetables Month

June is National Fruit & Vegetables Month. Your diet plays a vital role in helping you recover from an injury. Physical therapy and eating healthy foods helps you have a quick and fast recovery. “A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar, which can help keep your appetite in check.”

The combination of physical therapy and a good diet is the best way to keep you moving toward your goal. As your body heals, it requires proper nutrition in order to achieve maximum results. Eating a good amount of protein, vitamins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats each day is important for getting stronger in your workouts without suffering from muscle fatigue or exhaustion.

Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce inflammation. It is important to reduce inflammation caused by an injury to improve your range of motion. Vitamin C helps heal injuries by building new protein for skin, tendons, scar tissue and ligaments. Fruits and vegetables that contain vitamin C include oranges, grapefruits, kiwi, broccoli, bell peppers, tomatoes, and spinach.

Vitamin D and Calcium play an important role in helping to heal broken bones. Vitamin D is one of the best methods for natural pain management. Getting enough vitamin D may increase the chances of a good recovery after surgery. Calcium rich foods include leafy greens, broccoli, seaweed and spinach.

If you are recovering from an injury, it is important to keep the injured body part immobile. This may cause weight gain since you won’t be able to workout out or exercise to burn fat. Consuming fiber-heavy foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains will help promote feelings of fullness after meals.

At Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic Therapy, our physical therapists emphasize the importance of a proper diet. Our physical therapists will guide you through your physical therapy rehab program to help you improve your mobility and your positive mental outlook. Keeping track of your diet and physical activity are essential components of recovering from an injury.
