What is Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy (OT) can be a highly effective treatment modality. OT derives its name from the notion that everyone has "occupational roles" in life (e.g., parent, hobbyist, spouse or employee). Occupational therapy aids in the development or restoration of basic motor, cognitive, and emotional skills required to perform these tasks.

An Occupational therapist can:

Help youth with disabilities improve their school and social performance.
Assist those who have suffered an injury to regain their abilities.
Guide seniors who are experiencing physical and cognitive changes.

Occupational therapy exists to assist individuals with mental, developmental, physical, or emotional difficulties in regaining their independence, productivity, and fulfillment. It can aid in the development, recovery, or maintenance of daily living and occupational skills.

Occupational therapy promotes independence to maximize functional abilities, taking into account the patient's physical, psychological, and social well-being as well as environmental factors.
