Limited Range Of Motion
Range of motion (ROM) describes the distance and direction a joint can move. Different types of joints have different ranges of motion. Limited range of motion happens when a joint or a body part can’t reach its normal range of motion. Limited range of motion may occur due to pain, swelling of tissue around the joint, or stiffness of the muscles.
Limited range of motion may be due to
- Infection of a joint
- A fractured joint
- Dislocation of a joint
- Tearing of structures within the joint
Brain, nerve and muscle disorders can damage the nerves and muscles which can cause loss of motion. These disorders may include
- Cerebral palsy
- Torticollis
- Muscular dystrophy
- Stroke
- Brain injury
If damage to bones within a joint is present, loss of motion may occur. Damages may include
- frozen shoulder
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- If you have broken a joint in the past.
Not only can limited range of motion affect your mobility, but it can also prevent you from completing even the simplest daily activities, including self-care tasks, housekeeping chores and even social activities. Depending on the severity of symptoms, a patient may struggle and need help getting dressed, going to the bathroom, or eating. Physical therapists can help rebuild muscle strength and bone strength to improve range of motion while occupational therapists can develop activity modifications and compensatory techniques to help you perform daily activities at your greatest level of independence.
Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic Therapy have physical therapists and occupational therapists who evaluate their patients and diagnose what is causing the limited range of movement. Reddy Care’s physical therapists and occupational therapists can help increase range of motion, improve mobility, strengthen muscles, decrease pain, improve quality of life and regain your sense of independence.
