Managing Dementia with Physical Therapy

When a loved one is suffering from dementia it can be stressful and upsetting for everyone involved. While dementia, unfortunately, isn’t curable getting the right treatment to manage symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life is important and can help ease what otherwise can be a very distressing situation.

Physical therapy can slow cognitive decline in dementia patients by increasing blood flow to the brain through prescribed exercises. It also addresses mobility issues like balance and gait problems, reducing fall risks. Therapists evaluate and improve gait and coordination, and provide motor function training to enhance body mechanics.

Other treatments like manual therapy and pelvic floor rehabilitation can help soothe other common pains that may be affecting a dementia patient. The social connection between therapist and patient can also be therapeutic in helping patients build new relationships.
