Occupational Therapy for Amputation

Amputation is surgery to remove all or part of a limb or extremity. You may need an amputation if you’ve undergone a severe injury or infection or have a health condition like peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

Most common signs and symptoms that can lead to limb loss,

• Pain or numbness in the leg or foot
• Slow or non-healing sores or wounds
• Gangrene
• Shiny, smooth, dry skin on the leg and foot
• Thickening of toenails or nails
• Absent or weakened pulse in the leg
• An infection that won’t heal.

Causes of Amputation

• Severe injury (from a vehicle accident or serious burn, for example)
• Cancerous tumor in the bone or muscle of the limb
• Serious infection that does not get better with antibiotics or other treatment
• Thickening of nerve tissue, called a neuroma
• Frostbite

Occupational therapy is a vital part of a rehabilitation program whether you’re recovering from amputation. OT teaches patients to function without a lower limb with everyday tasks such as bed mobility, dressing, grooming, transferring from surface to surface, homemaking, and community re-entry skills.
