Occupational Therapy for Stroke

A stroke, also known as transient ischemic attack or cerebrovascular accident, happens when blood flow to the brain is blocked. This prevents the brain from getting oxygen and nutrients from the blood. Without oxygen and nutrients, brain cells begin to die within minutes. Sudden bleeding in the brain can also cause a stroke if it damages brain cells.

Symptoms

• Trouble speaking and understanding what others are saying. 
• Paralysis or numbness of the face, arm or leg. 
• Problems seeing in one or both eyes. 
• Headache. 
• Trouble walking. 

Causes  

Ischaemic strokes 

• Smoking
• High blood pressure (hypertension)
• Obesity
• High cholesterol levels
• Diabetes
• Excessive alcohol intake

Haemorrhagic strokes

• Being overweight
• Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol
• Smoking
• Lack of exercise
• Stress
