Occupational Therapy for Strokes
Occupational therapy helps along the road to recovery after a stroke. “A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures). When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it and brain cells die.” There are two types of strokes; an ischemic stroke caused by a clot obstructing the blood flow to the brain and an hemorrhagic stroke caused by a blood vessel rupturing and preventing blood flow to the brain. Immediate action and treatment can help reduce brain damage and other complications.
Signs of a stroke may include:
- Trouble speaking
- Numbness of the face, arms and legs
- Headaches
- Trouble walking
- Problems seeing
Risk factors that can increase the risk of stroke may include:
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Smoking cigarettes
- Family history of strokes
- Physical inactivity
- Cardiovascular disease
- COVID-19
Strokes may cause people to lose their ability to perform daily tasks. These daily tasks may include dressing, eating, cooking, bathing, writing and/or driving. In order to complete daily activities you need to maintain concentration, balance, retain information and reach for objects. Occupational therapy helps patients improve their sensory and motor skills. An occupational therapist can help teach you to relearn movements while regaining as much quality of life and independence as possible.
At Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic therapy, an occupational therapist will evaluate and provide a unique treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Your treatment plan may include exercises and activities to help regain your cognitive and physical abilities. Your occupational therapist can evaluate the safety of your home and recommend equipment that can make your home more accessible.
