Peripheral Neuropathy

Nerve damage is also known as peripheral neuropathy (PN). PN is a condition where the nerves that carry messages from your brain and spinal cord, to the rest of your body are damaged. Damage to the nerves interfere with communication between the brain and other parts of the body. Peripheral nerves send messages to help you know when you are hungry, or that your feet are cold. PN can be caused by an injury from a car accident, a fall, a sports injury or an autoimmune disease.

 

It is important to get medical care for PN as soon as possible. Early diagnosis and treatment may prevent permanent damage to the nerves. Symptoms range depending on the severity and which nerves are affected. Symptoms may include sensory, motor and/or autotonic issues.

Physical therapy and occupational therapy can help people with peripheral neuropathy to improve their quality of life. Your physical therapy and occupational therapy treatment plan may include: massage therapy, myofascial release, strengthening exercises, therapeutic ultrasound, lightForce Class IV Laser therapy, electrical stimulation, exercise rehabilitation and home exercise program.
