Peripheral Neuropathy

Nerve damage is also known as peripheral neuropathy (PN). PN is a condition where the nerves that carry messages from your brain and spinal cord, to the rest of your body are damaged. Damage to the nerves interfere with communication between the brain and other parts of the body. Peripheral nerves send messages to help you know when you are hungry, or that your feet are cold. PN can be caused by an injury from a car accident, a fall, a sports injury or an autoimmune disease.

It is important to get medical care for PN as soon as possible. Early diagnosis and treatment may prevent permanent damage to the nerves. Symptoms range depending on the severity and which nerves are affected. Symptoms may include sensory, motor and/or autotonic issues. 

People with PN may experience symptoms such as:

• Numbness and tingling in upper and lower limbs
• Loss of sensation
• Pain
• Clumsiness
• Weakness in the muscles
• Imbalance 
• Decreased ability to function in daily activities
• Flushed or pale skin
• Bowel or bladder changes

Physical therapy and occupational therapy can help people with peripheral neuropathy to improve their quality of life.
