Physical Therapy can Help improve Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine that affects as many as 9 million Americans. Often, this condition has no know cause. In rarer cases, the deformity is linked to injuries, muscular dystrophy, or cerebral palsy.
What are the signs of scoliosis?
Poor upper body alignment can indicate scoliosis. Other signs can include:
- A hip or shoulder raised higher than the other
- Back pain
- Ribs that stick out on one side
- In more severe cases, difficulty breathing due to the ribs pressing on the lungs
If you notice any of these symptoms, a simple X-ray can usually confirm the diagnosis.
How do you treat Scoliosis?
Treatments will vary depending on the severity of the curvature. Serious cases may require surgery. Bracing can be a good option for some. Physical therapy, in most minor cases, may be all that’s needed to help your body function more effectively with your alignment issues. Physical therapy can also be used to augment more aggressive treatments. It can also increase range-of-motion and strength in parts of your body that may have weakened because of your misalignment. Massage and other modalities such as electrical stimulation can also be used by physical therapist to relieve pain and stiffness.
