Physical Therapy can Help Manage Scoliosis!

Great Neck Physical Therapy for Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. Patients with scoliosis will have a C or S-shaped curve in the spine. It usually develops in children around 10 to 12 years of age. It is a common problem millions of Americans suffer with, however, with proper care it can be managed and doesn’t have to become disabling.

While scoliosis causes more cosmetic or structural issues, it can cause back pain, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing due to pressure on the lungs.  The cause of scoliosis is unknown, but some cases have been linked to other conditions such as cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy.  If the condition is more severe, surgery may be recommended.  In more moderate cases, where the bones are still growing, bracing can be used to prevent further curvature of the spine.

Physical therapy is very effective in the majority of cases, in helping the patient retrain their body to function more effectively with their alignment issues. A physical therapist can help increase your range of motion and help you strengthen weakened muscles through certain exercises. Physical therapists can also perform treatments like massage and electrical stimulation to help reduce pain and stiffness. Proper treatment early can help prevent worsening and further complications. Here at Reddy Care Physical & Occupational Therapy, we have a team of PTs ready to help you manage your scoliosis. They will provide you with a personalized plan that will help you reach your goals and manage your specific needs. Don’t delay, call us today and get started with your treatment!
