Physical Therapy can manage your Plantar Fasciitis Symptoms

Your Plantar Fascia is the thick band of tissue that runs from the ball of your foot to your toes. It acts as a shock absorber and supports the arch of the foot. When this band becomes inflamed, it is known as Planter fasciitis.


This typically occurs from the tightening of the tissue under the foot and even further up in the legs.  This tightening causes inflammation and tiny tears in the tissue that leads to pain. Plantar fasciitis most often occurs in runners and people who spend a lot of time on their feet. 


Individuals with plantar fasciitis often experience:

  • Burning or sharp pain when standing on the affected leg. 
  • Pain is usually worse first thing in the morning or after sitting for a prolonged period of time.   
  • Pain is usually experienced in the heel but can extend along the bottom of the foot.

Physical therapy is an effective non-invasive treatment for plantar fasciitis. It can help not only reduce the pain but prevent reoccurrence as well. After evaluating your gait, posture, and other factors, your therapist will create a custom treatment plan for you to manage your symptoms.  Your therapist will show you exercises to strengthen your lower leg muscles, helping to stabilize your walk and reducing pressure on your plantar fascia. Among helpful exercises and stretches, your therapist may also include some other treatments such as ultrasound technology, and ice to reduce swelling.
