Physical Therapy for Gout
Gout is a common and complex form of arthritis that can affect anyone. It's characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in one or more joints, most often in the big toe.
Symptoms of Gout
- Intense pain
- Discoloration or redness
- Stiffness
- Swelling
- Tenderness, even to a light touch
- Warmth, or a feeling like the joint is “on fire”
Causes of Gout
- Having high urate levels; however, not everyone who has high levels develops gout
- Having a family history of gout.
- Increasing age
- Drinking alcohol
- Eating foods that are rich in purines (usually from animal sources), a substance that breaks down into urate
- Drinking beverages that have high-fructose corn syrup, such as soda
Physical Therapy helps the patient to keep the joints working, as it is important to exercise sufficiently. First, they focuses on stopping the acute inflammation of joints affected by gout arthritis, which is critical. Second, it addresses the long-term management of the disease in order to prevent future gouty arthritis and shrink gouty uric acid crystal deposits in the tissues.
