Physical Therapy for Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve travels from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg.

Symptoms of Sciatica

• Moderate to severe pain in lower back, buttock and down your leg.
• Numbness or weakness in your lower back, buttock, leg or feet.
• Pain that worsens with movement; loss of movement.
• “Pins and needles” feeling in your legs, toes or feet.

Causes of Sciatica

• Lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal in your lower back)
• Degenerative disk disease (breakdown of disks, which act as cushions between the vertebrae)
• Spondylolisthesis (a condition in which one vertebra slips forward over another one)
• Pregnancy

A Physical Therapist may prescribe a combination of various types of physical, manual, soft tissue mobilization, and/or exercise therapies in treating sciatica. Specific exercises depend on the underlying cause of sciatica, as well as other factors, such as the patient’s level of pain, overall conditioning, and the physical therapist’s training and experience.
