Physical Therapy for Vestibular Rehabilitation

 Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy involves exercises that help you manage dizziness and balance issues (imbalance). Vestibular rehabilitation therapy takes time, but it can improve your quality of life.

How does vestibular rehabilitation therapy work?

The vestibular system refers to the sensory systems within your inner ear that provides your brain with information about balance, motion, and the location of your head and body in relation to your surroundings.

Vestibular disorders relate to the inner ear and issues within this system. Dysfunction of the vestibular system can lead to a variety of symptoms including:

Vertigo is a common vestibular disorder where you experience a feeling of rocking or rotating while at rest. Vertigo can originate from the spinal cord or brain (central causes), or the inner ear (peripheral causes).

Vestibular rehab aims at helping patients who are experiencing symptoms of a vestibular disorder. This can be delivered by a physical therapist who can significantly reduce symptoms related to vertigo and other vestibular conditions. For example, by helping you perform specific head movements, your therapist can help you move the crystals in the inner ear that are causing vertigo.  Your therapist may also have you perform a series of head and eye movements known as Cawthorne head exercises, which can help decrease the sensitivity of these nerves and relieve vertigo. There are many tools a therapist can use to help patients overcome their balance issues. Treatment will be tailored to your individual needs and symptoms.

At Reddy Care Physical and Occupational therapy, our team of therapists have extensive experience in treating balance disorders and vertigo using vestibular rehab. Call our office today to find out more about our different treatment options!
