Physical Therapy is a Key Part of Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis and Physical Therapy

Your feet and heels are extremely valuable in terms of helping you move around and get place to place. Unfortunately, they have to work extremely hard to support your weight, and because of this they can experience a lot of wear and tear and can become susceptible to different injuries and painful conditions. Plantar fasciitis is one such condition. In fact, plantar fasciitis is one of the most common orthopedic complaints.

So, what is plantar fasciitis?

The plantar fasciitis is a thick ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. Plantar fasciitis usually occurs from a tightening of tissue under the foot and even further up the leg. This tightening then leads to tiny tears in the tissue, leading to pain.  Plantar fasciitis typically occurs in runners or those who spend a lot of time on their feet.

If you have plantar fasciitis you may experience heel pain that can extend along the bottom of the foot, pain that’s worse in the morning when you first get up, or pain after prolonged activity. Pain can be dull or sharp.

How can physical therapy help?

Physical therapy is a key part of treatment for plantar fasciitis. Your physical therapist can show you specific exercises and stretches to do to improve your range-of-motion and stabilize your gait. They will evaluate your movements and walking patterns and design a personalized treatment plan based on your needs. Your therapist may also incorporate other more passive modalities such as:

Treatment is very individual, and your therapist will determine what treatments will work best for you.
