Plantar Fasciitis and Physical Therapy
The feet are made up of an intricate system of 26 bones that help us walk, move around and support our weight. When the feet are injured, it can be quite disabling.
The two main types of conditions that affect the feet are injuries and degeneration due to overuse. Below are some common foot conditions.
- Plantar fasciitis – plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. This occurs when the ligament responsible for supporting the foot's arch, the plantar fascia, becomes inflamed. This causes pain in the bottom of the heel.
- Bursitis- Bursae are the fluid-filled sacs that help cushion your joints. Bursitis occurs when they become inflamed. This can decrease the foot's ability to absorb shock, causing pain in the heel or balls of your feet.
- Bone spurs – a bone spur is a tiny, pointed outgrowth on the bone of the foot. This can cause pain and discomfort.
- Flat feet – flat feet is a condition where you don’t have that much arch to your feet. This can be congenital or can develop as the result of a fracture or torn ligament.
Physical therapy can be effective in treating various foot conditions, helping reduce pain and increase mobility. Treatments that may be used are:
- Ultrasound
- Massage
- Electrical stimulation
- Hot and cold treatment
- And laser therapy
Stretching and strengthening exercises are also important to get you back to full function. Your therapist will assess your needs and determine the best course of treatment for you.
