Post COVID-19 Pulmonary Rehab

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) can cause and/or exacerbate chronic health issues such as difficulty breathing and shortness of breath, reduced exercise performance and diminished quality of life. Inactivity can lead to deconditioning, allowing further worsening of symptoms. Complications after COVID-19 can last for days, weeks, months or even years. These complications may include impairments in muscle strength, heart and lung capacity, pain, balance, dizziness and walking ability.

Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in post COVID-19 patients should include management of nutrition, posture, oxygen therapy, breathing exercises, stretching, manual therapy, and physical activity (Md Abu Bakar Siddiq, et al. 2020) . COVID-19 may cause severe inflammation and irritation in the lungs. Pulmonary rehab is effective in improving lung function and quality of life following mild or critical cases of COVID-19.

Pulmonary rehab can help you become stronger by increasing your level of fitness. It is important to exercise your lungs and muscles to help you become more active so you can do the things you enjoy. Pulmonary rehabilitation helps patients cope and relieve the symptoms caused from COVID-19.
