Prevent Sport Injuries!

Sports Injuries physical therapy

While most sports games have been canceled for the foreseeable future, that hasn’t stopped a lot of people from staying active and exercising.  Although exercise is highly beneficial for your health, you can put yourself at risk for injury if you don’t take the proper precautions.

You can prevent injury by taking some simple measures. The most effective way to prevent injury is by stretching and warming up. Cold muscles are more susceptible to overstretching and tears, warm muscles will be more flexible.  Having the proper technique is also very important. Certain movements or exercises can be made safer by using the correct form. You will also want to make sure you have the right shoes and equipment. Ill-fitting shoes or gear can increase your risk of injury.  The last thing to keep in mind is to not overdo it, let your body recover when it needs to.

Sports injuries occur as a result of participation in any recreational or professional athletic activity. This could be anything from playing baseball or football but also includes running, cycling, and even golf.  Sports injuries typically fall in one of two categories, the first being more of an immediate discomfort or pain from trauma, the second from an overuse condition. The second develops gradually over time due to continued repetitive motion.

Some sports injuries are more severe than others and treatment will vary depending on the extent of the injury.  Some minor cases are treatable with self-care at home, while others may require surgery. Often physical therapy is crucial to full recovery. Your physical therapist will develop a custom treatment plan based on the injury sustained.  Treatment may include, electrical muscle stimulation, heat therapy, or even an exercise prescription to strengthen muscles.
