Rehabilitation After Amputation

Amputation is a surgical procedure that involves removing all or part of a limb or extremity. It may be necessary due to a severe injury, infection, or health conditions such as peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
Common Signs and Symptoms Leading to Amputation:
- Pain or numbness in the leg or foot
- Slow or non-healing sores or wounds
- Gangrene
- Shiny, smooth, dry skin on the leg or foot
- Thickened toenails or nails
- Absent or weakened pulse in the leg
- Persistent infections that do not heal
Common Causes of Amputation:
- Severe injury (e.g., from a vehicle accident or serious burns)
- Cancerous tumors in the bone or muscle
- Serious infections resistant to antibiotics or other treatments
- Thickening of nerve tissue, known as a neuroma
- Frostbite
Role of Occupational Therapy in Rehabilitation
Occupational therapy (OT) plays a crucial role in rehabilitation after an amputation. OT helps individuals adapt to life without a limb by teaching essential skills for daily living, including:
- Bed mobility
- Dressing and grooming
- Transferring between surfaces
- Homemaking activities
- Community re-entry skills
