Rehabilitation After Amputation

Amputation is a surgical procedure that involves removing all or part of a limb or extremity. It may be necessary due to a severe injury, infection, or health conditions such as peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

Common Signs and Symptoms Leading to Amputation:

• Pain or numbness in the leg or foot
• Slow or non-healing sores or wounds
• Gangrene
• Shiny, smooth, dry skin on the leg or foot
• Thickened toenails or nails
• Absent or weakened pulse in the leg
• Persistent infections that do not heal

Common Causes of Amputation:

• Severe injury (e.g., from a vehicle accident or serious burns)
• Cancerous tumors in the bone or muscle
• Serious infections resistant to antibiotics or other treatments
• Thickening of nerve tissue, known as a neuroma
• Frostbite
