Scoliosis Rehabilitation through Occupational Therapy

Scoliosis causes the spine to curve to one side. The curvature can be in any part of the spine, but the most commonly affected regions are the upper spine and lower back.

Signs and Symptoms of Scoliosis

• A visible curve in your back
• Shoulders, a waist, or hips that look uneven
• One shoulder blade that looks bigger
• Ribs that stick out farther on one side of your body than the other

In addition to visible symptoms, scoliosis may lead to:

• Low back pain
• Back stiffness
• Pain and numbness in your legs (from pinched nerves)
• Fatigue due to muscle strain

Causes

Below are some of the possible causes of scoliosis:

• Neuromuscular conditions
• Congenital scoliosis 
• Specific genes
• Leg length
• Syndromic scoliosis
• Osteoporosis
• Other causes: Poor posture, carrying backpacks or satchels, connective tissue disorders, and some injuries can cause spinal curvature.

The occupational therapist will assess all daily activities, including the need for manual labor and all posture while at the table. During all manual work or even table work, the Therapist will assess the proper posture to complete the task. Occupational therapists will advise the scoliosis patient to change jobs or even change the hours of the work 

schedule so that the patient can always cope with it. Therapists may even demand that manual labor be eliminated.
