Sports Injuries and Physical Therapy

Sports Injuries and Physical Therapy

Sports injuries occur during exercise or while participating in a sport, no matter if its football, baseball, tennis, or even swimming. Children are particularly susceptible because they are still growing, but sport injuries can happen at any age.

Sports injuries can be sudden and acute from a specific trauma or accident, or they can occur gradually as the result of wear and tear and repetitive movement.  Any part of your body can sustain an injury while playing sports but here are some common sports injuries:

  • Shoulder injuries

Overuse of the shoulder is a common cause of sports injuries, as the shoulder is a crucial component in many sporting activities like swimming, basketball etc.

  • Tennis elbow

Tennis elbow is a condition where tiny tears develop in the elbow ligaments caused by repetitive use of the joint.

  • Hamstring strain

Your hamstring consists of three muscles behind your kneecap, it gets overstretched if you place excessive strain on this part of your leg.

  • Sciatica

Improper stretching before sporting activities can cause pressure on the sciatic nerve. This can cause severe lower back pain which radiates down the leg.

  • ACL tear

A hard impact to the knee can cause a tear or strain to the ACL, which can be difficult to heal.

If you have sustained a sports injury, the help of a physical therapist can aid tremendously in your healing and ability to get back to playing the sports you love. Treatment will vary depending on the injury sustained but generally will include a program of exercises and stretches, in combination with other passive modalities like electrical stimulation, and laser therapy. Other elements like massage and heat therapy can be used as well.
