Occupational Therapy for Stroke

Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. Stroke survivors can face a myriad of difficulties, such as weakness in one side of the body, a decline in emotional and cognitive abilities, and the inability to walk and care for themselves, among others.  Families and those affected by stroke can face extreme hardship without the right care and support.


Occupational therapy, in addition to physical therapy, can be instrumental in addressing these issues and helping the stroke patient become more independent.  The focus of occupational therapy is to help patients re-learn safer and easier ways to accomplish daily tasks, or activities of daily living (ADLs).  Depending on the extent of the stroke and the needs and goals of the patient, treatment with an occupational therapist may include, but is not limited to:

  • Retraining on life skills and daily tasks, including recommending and training in any adaptive equipment to accomplish these tasks safely.
  • Addressing any deficits in sensory, cognitive, or visual impairments and how they affect the patient’s ability to partake in ADLs.
  • Doing any needed workplace evaluations and recommending any modifications needed in order for the patient to continue safely working. 
  • Evaluating and treating any swallowing difficulties.
  • Teaching and promoting healthy lifestyle habits that can reduce the risk of a secondary stroke.

There are many tools an occupational therapist can use to help improve a patient’s quality of life. Treatment is very individual and very much tailored to the interests and needs of the patient. It’s important for patients to maintain their emotional well-being, social connections, and healthy lifestyle habits post-stroke. Occupational therapists aim to facilitate this and help to smoothly transition the patient into everyday life after the trauma of a stroke.
