Summer Safety Tips
June is National Safety Month. The goal of Summer Safety Month is to increase public awareness of the leading safety and health risks that are increased in the summer months to decrease the number of injuries. The following summer safety tips are to keep you and your family safe.
PROTECT YOUR SKIN
- Apply sunscreen before going outdoors. Keep reapplying after swimming in the water or sweating. If the sun's hot and the UV index is too high make sure to stay in the shade or under an umbrella.
- The higher the SPF numbers, the more protection. The sun can still cause damage on days that are cooler or cloudy, so wearing sunscreen whenever you’re outside is the best way to protect your skin.
COOL OFF IN THE WATER
- Always warm up and stretch before swimming or doing any other water activity. Wear water resistant sunscreen, and a life vest when necessary.
- Swimming is a great whole body workout. Swimming improves strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness.
- Water activities may include kayaking, paddle boarding, waterskiing, wakeboarding and so much more.
STAY HYDRATED
- It is important to stay hydrated throughout the day. Our bodies lose a lot of water when we sweat. Make sure to drink water before, during and after being outdoors in the heat.
- Signs of dehydration: Headache, dizziness, fatigue, muscle cramps, rapid breathing and fainting.
SPORTS SAFETY
- Heat, exhaustion and dehydration can cause injuries while playing sports outdoors. Warm up, stretch, wear the proper gear, and remember to cool down and stretch afterwards.
- Wear loose, lightweight and moisture wicking clothing when exercising outdoors.
- Workout during the early morning hours or in the evening when it is cooler to avoid heat stroke.
EYE SAFETY
- The sun's UV light can cause damage to your eyes. Shade your eyes with sunglasses, hats, or an umbrella.
- Remember to wear sunglasses whenever you are out in the sun. Look for sunglasses labeled “100% UV Protection”, and make sure they are tall and wide enough to cover your eyes and eyelids.
Summer often means warmth, fun, and sunshine, but it can also bring safety hazards. Make sure to stay aware and educate your family and friends on how to stay safe during the summer months.
