Tips To Help You Succeed With Your Physical Therapy Treatment
- Come Prepared. Bring X Ray or MRI images to your first appointment if you feel your physical therapist or occupational therapist will need them. Write down your list of medications and symptoms before arriving at your appointment so you don’t forget to mention any information. Coming to your evaluation appointment prepared will help your physical therapist or occupational therapist have a better understanding of your symptoms and conditions so they will be able to create a unique tailored treatment plan that will best suit your needs.
- Wear The Proper Attire. It is important to be comfortable while attending physical or occupational therapy. Wear loose-fitting comfortable clothes and shoes with non-slip soles. Steer clear from wearing loose clothing because you will be more at risk of falling over your own feet. Loose clothing can cause issues with your stability. Do not wear tight clothing that will restrict your blood flow and movement.
- Set Goals. Setting goals should be talked about between you and your physical or occupational therapist. Your therapist needs to know what your goals are to help you reach them. Your physical therapist and/or occupational therapist will tailor your treatment to help you achieve your goals. Some examples of goals may include playing a certain sport again, getting out of a chair, preventing the fear of falling, and so much more. Set your goals and celebrate each step along the way!
- Do Your Homework. It is important to do the exercises and stretches at home that your physical therapist prescribes to you. You will benefit significantly if and when you put the time and effort in with the at home exercises. Attending your physical or occupational therapy appointments in the clinic and doing your at home exercises will help speed up your recovery. Physical therapy homework builds strength, helps control pain, and gives you control over your recovery.
- Ask Questions. If you have questions make sure to ask your physical or occupational therapist. Your PT or OT will be more than happy to answer your questions and help you. You may have questions about hot or ice applications, your condition or treatment, and/or pain management. For example, some important questions to ask may be, Do you commonly treat my condition?, What type of PT will be provided for my condition?, How is physical therapy going to help me?, or What level of discomfort or pain can I expect during each physical therapy session?
