Total Knee Replacement

Total Knee Replacement (TKR) also known as Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) is performed to replace the damaged knee joints that are causing pain. The components of your knee allow you to complete your daily activities as well as sitting, standing, bending, and walking. There are two types of knee replacement surgeries.

  1. Total knee replacement is when the entire joint is replaced with artificial surfaces.

  1. Partial knee replacement (also known as unicompartmental knee arthroplasty) is when only one compartment of the knee is damaged and needs to be replaced.

Total knee replacement is the most common of the two surgeries. The knee has a joint which consists of three bones: the femur, tibia, and patella. You are constantly bending and straightening your knees which makes your femur roll against your tibia causing your patella to glide in front of your femur. Over time your cartilage in between these bones wear down causing the bones to rub together. The bones rubbing together over time will cause pain and damage. TKR surgery replaces the damaged joint with metal alloy implants and a plastic spacer.

Total knee replacements are performed to improve knees that are causing severe pain, inflammation and stiffness. Knees may have severe damage and deformity, or ligament damage, and may even have been replaced previously but either failed or loosened over time.

Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic Therapy can help you recover after undergoing a knee replacement surgery. Your Physical therapist or Occupational therapist will develop a treatment plan to improve your knee movement. Occupational therapists help address patients' active daily living (ADL) requirements and their safety upon discharge from a TKR surgery.

Your Reddy Care physical therapy treatment plan may include strengthening, stretching, manual therapy, balance, coordination and aerobic conditioning. We have state of the art equipment which helps stimulate the healing process, this includes Normatec and the LightForce class IV laser.
