Understanding Asperger's Syndrome
Asperger's Syndrome is a form of autism that influences how individuals perceive and interact with the world around them. Although the condition affects people differently, common behavioral patterns are often seen. People with Asperger's Syndrome are frequently of above-average intelligence. However, social interactions can be challenging, as individuals may struggle to interpret both verbal and non-verbal communication despite often having strong language skills.
Symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome:
- A strong preference for routine and rules, with distress when these are disrupted.
- Higher levels of anxiety, which can manifest in various ways, including behavioral issues.
- Difficulty establishing rapport with peers or strangers, often preferring solitary activities.
- Challenges in reading social cues and understanding body language.
- Trouble engaging in imaginative play or activities.
- Intense focus or interest in specific topics.
- Difficulty expressing or experiencing empathy toward others.
Causes of Asperger's Syndrome:
The exact causes of Asperger's Syndrome remain unknown, but research suggests that genetics and brain abnormalities may play a role.
Occupational Therapy (OT) Approach:
An occupational therapist's (OT) first objective is to understand why a child with Asperger's may experience challenges in daily activities. This begins with consultations involving the parents and the child (depending on their age), gathering information on the child's functioning at home, school, and in social environments. Teachers or other professionals may also be involved in the process. A formal assessment may be conducted to establish a baseline and guide the therapy plan moving forward.
