Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), also known as median nerve compression, is a common condition characterized by numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hands. It occurs when pressure is placed on the median nerve, which travels from the arm, through the carpal tunnel in the wrist, and into the hand.
Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
- Weak grip or difficulty holding objects with one or both hands
- Pain or numbness in the hands, often in the thumb, index, and middle fingers
- Tingling or "pins and needles" sensation in the fingers
- A swollen or tight feeling in the fingers
- Burning sensations, especially in the thumb and nearby fingers
- Symptoms often worsen at night, disrupting sleep
Common Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
- Repetitive hand movements, such as typing or using tools
- Pregnancy, due to fluid retention or swelling
- Inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
- Diabetes, which can affect nerve health
- Physical injuries to the wrist, such as fractures or dislocations
- Growths in the carpal tunnel, such as cysts or tumors
- Overactive pituitary gland or other hormonal imbalances
- Any condition that leads to swelling or inflammation around the wrist tendons
Understanding the causes and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome can help in early diagnosis and treatment, reducing the risk of long-term nerve damage. If you suspect you may have CTS, consult with a healthcare professional for proper management.
