What is Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder or Adhesive Capsulitis is a condition that causes pain and stiffness in the shoulder. Over time the shoulder can become “frozen” or hard to move. It most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60.
While the exact cause is unknown, certain factors, like diabetes, and other diseases, can put you more at risk. Frozen shoulder can also develop after a period of immobilization, such as after injury or surgery, as a consequence of not being to exercise or move your shoulder.
Frozen shoulder occurs when the shoulder capsule thickens and becomes stiff and tight. Thick bands of tissues called adhesions then develop. This can cause extreme pain and severe immobility in your shoulder, to the point where you may not be able to move your shoulder without help.
Physical therapy is the primary treatment for a frozen shoulder. Specific exercises under the supervision of a physical therapist will help restore motion. Once the therapist has done their initial evaluation; they can put together the most effective mix of treatments to manage your shoulder pain. Some of the treatments that may be used are:
- Heat and ice therapy
- Myofascial release
- Electrical stimulation
- Targeted exercise and stretches.
