What is gout and its causes

Gout occurs as a result of excessive uric acid in the body. It’s a disease and its overload in the body leads to the formation of tiny crystals of urate that deposit in various tissues of the body, especially the joints. When crystals form in the joints, it causes recurring attacks of joint inflammation (arthritis).

Things that may increase your chances of getting gout include:

Gout is a progressive and chronic disease. Chronic gout can result in the deposition of uric acid crystals in the tissues, especially in and around the joints, and can cause joint destruction, impaired kidney function, and kidney stones.

At Reddy Care Physical and Occupational Therapy, we assist patients in maintaining healthy joints through adequate exercise. First, and most importantly, physical therapy focuses on reducing the acute inflammation of joints affected by gout arthritis. Second, it addresses the long-term management of the disease to prevent future gouty arthritis and reduce tissue uric acid crystal deposits.

Attacks of gouty arthritis typically subside within a week when aggressive anti-inflammatory medications are administered. In addition to being painful and frustrating, recurrent gouty arthritis can cause irreversible damage to cartilage and bone.

If you already have gouty arthritis or if you believe you may develop it in the near future, give Reddy Care a call to schedule your initial consultation today!
