What is Pediatric Physical Therapy
Most people think physical therapy is for athletes or adults in recovery, but sometimes children and even babies need physical therapy too. Physical therapists specializing in pediatrics can treat as early as a new born.
There are many reasons a child may need to see a physical therapist some common ones are as follows:
- Sports injuries
- Developmental delays
- Certain genetic disorders
- Birth defects, such as spinal bifida
- And other orthopedic disabilities or injuries
Through physical therapy, a child can improve their range-of-motion, strength, flexibility, and movement patterns. They will work with the child’s individual goals and difficulties and help them take part in the daily activities they want to do.
What does a therapy session for a child look like?
For the most part, your child’s physical therapy session should look and feel like play. A good pediatric PT will aim to keep the sessions fun and engaging while challenging the child to keep them motivated and happy. Some treatments or modalities that are commonly part of a physical therapy program are flexibility exercises, developmental activities, and training to build strength. For children with injuries, they can also benefit from the therapist using other treatments such as ultrasound technology and electrical stimulation to promote healing.
