What is Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis (PLAN-tur fas-e-I-tis) is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of each foot and connects the heel bone to the toes (plantar fascia).

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

• Heel pain
• Pain in the arch of your foot
• Stiffness
• Swelling around your heel
• A tight achilles tendon

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

• Being on your feet all day for work
• Playing sports
• Exercising or working on a hard surface
• Exercising without stretching or warming up
• Wearing shoes that don’t support your feet well enough 

When you begin therapy your physical therapist will design exercises to improve flexibility in the calf muscles, achilles' tendon, and the plantar fascia. Your  physical therapist will also provide ideas for therapies that you can perform at home, such as doing your stretches for the calf muscles and the plantar fascia.
