Your SMART New Year’s Resolution
New Year’s Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It’s a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make. Whether your goal this year is to start exercising, lose weight, gain weight, or get healthy, having a solid plan can make the difference between failure and success.
Below are a few tips to help you prepare for your health and fitness journey in 2020.
How to make a New Year’s Resolution
1) Don’t make resolutions. Set goals. Goals are fundamental building blocks of success. When I set goals, I don’t feel like I’m trying to become somebody new; instead, I’m trying to achieve something that the current me already wants.
2) Pursue one goal at a time. If you have a big goal — losing 65 pounds — make it your only project. If you do set more than one goal, work on only one goal at a time.
3) Be prepared for setbacks. You’re not going to meet your goals without mistakes and setbacks. Things happen. The best way to deal with problems is to prepare for them. Have a plan. Before trouble occurs, know what you’ll do to handle it.
Mental Preparation
While exercise is about moving your body, it is also about your mindset. If you had past failure with exercise goals, it is usually your mind that stands in the way. Take time to learn about your exercise obstacles, so you can create a suitable exercise program. This can make all the difference in 2020.
How much do you know about exercise?
Before you jump into an exercise program, take some time to learn a bit about exercise and weight loss. Everyone benefits from a different type of exercise program, so the more knowledge you have the more effective the program will be. Consult a physical therapist if you need help.
Exercise Motivation
Already know what you are doing? You may just need a push in the right direction. Motivation is the most important thing you’ll need in order to get and stay fit. There are many ways to motivate yourself. Try different ways and find one or two that work well for you. And then apply them consistently in your life.
