Fibromyalgia (fi·bro·my·al·gi·a)

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is one of the most common types of chronic pain disorders in adults. Women are twice as likely to develop fibromyalgia than men but it can happen to anyone at any age. Most people are diagnosed around 35-45 years old and are more likely to experience it as they get older. The cause for fibromyalgia is unknown but it appears to happen when the body's central nervous system is not processing pain properly.

Fibromyalgia is associated with causing pain, aches, fatigue, dizziness, soreness, depression and anxiety. People who suffer from this disease experience trouble sleeping, headaches, morning stiffness, sensitivity to light, problems with memory or concentration, tingling or numbness in their hands and feet, digestive problems and changes in mood.

Doctors can run specific tests to diagnose if a patient has fibromyalgia. This may include physical exams, X-rays, blood work and exploring the patient's family history.

It is important to gain a better understanding and learn what helps to manage your pain when suffering from this disorder. There are numerous treatment methods that can help fibromyalgia, one of which is aquatic therapy. Exercising in water improves overall fitness while putting less stress on the body. Water is known to be extremely supportive, relaxing and stimulating to those who suffer from fibromyalgia.

Other ways physical therapy can help manage fibromyalgia is through regular strength training and exercises to reduce your pain. A physical therapist may also provide massage therapy or ice and heat therapy. Occupational therapy can help with making adjustments in your home or at your workplace to make your daily activities easier to accomplish.

Reddy Care Physical, Occupational and Aquatic therapy has it all! Stop waking up in pain, call us today to see what kind of treatment plans we have to help you manage fibromyalgia.
