Laser therapy

Laser Therapy done by Physical Therapists

Cleared by the FDA in 2003, Class IV laser therapy has become a standard of care for many musculoskeletal injuries. Unlike surgical lasers, which use precisely focused light to remove tissue, this lower grade therapy laser does not focus light and does not harm tissue. The Class IV laser is used by many clinicians as part of their treatment programs to relieve minor muscle and joint pain.

Laser treatment is a great non-invasive option to reduce pain and inflammation without side effects. Through a photochemical process called photobiomodulation, where photons enter the tissue and interact with the cytochrome c complex within the mitochondria, cellular metabolism is increased, leading to a decrease in pain and inflammation. This makes it a great alternative to medication which can have a lot of undesirable side effects. Laser therapy is generally a more sustainable, long-lasting method of relieving pan.

Laser therapy can be used to treat both acute and chronic conditions. The availability of multiple treatment heads offers additional flexibility for the clinician. This allows the laser treatment to be customized to fit the patient’s specific needs. Lasers that have a larger power ranges also offer more versatility, allowing clinicians to treat low and slow or at maximum output.

The best part about laser therapy is that treatments are fast and effective. A common concern about laser treatment is that it might hurt, but it is a relatively fast and painless process. Most patients experience no to little sensation, if anything they experience a gentle soothing warmth. Depending on the size of the area being completed, treatment usually only takes 5-10 minutes. Patients usually experience rapid relief and a significant decrease of pain.
