Scoliosis

scoliosis

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. It is generally seen in childhood, as a child enters puberty, but can also occur in adulthood. Some curves are more severe than others, in some cases requiring surgery. Proper treatment early on can help prevent worsening of the curve and other health complications.

Scoliosis in adulthood can occur for a variety of reasons, genetics, past spinal or joint injuries, knee or foot distortion, or even head injuries. Some telltale signs of scoliosis are, a hip or shoulder raised higher than the other, back pain, and difficulty breathing due to ribs pressing on your lungs. Treatment will vary depending on the severity. Mild scoliosis doesn’t usually require medical intervention. Certain exercise may be prescribed by your physician or physical therapist to help with your alignment. Mild scoliosis will respond the best to exercise treatment.

Physical therapy can help improve function, as well as augment other more aggressive treatments. Physical therapy can help you retrain your body to function effectively with your alignment issues. A physical therapist can help you improve strength in the parts of the body that may have weakened due to misalignment. Other treatments like massage and electrical stimulation can be used to reduce pain and stiffness.
